Inspecting FRP tanks by Acoustic Emission Testing (AET) is the only global integrity test which will detect and grade damage in the composite material of FRP tanks. The method uses an array of passive sensors which are mounted on the tank shell.
The level in the tank is raised by addition of water or the tank service contents, in a stepped programme to 110% of the previous 12 month level, with holding stops during which and AE energy in the form of noise is detected by the sensors and graded by intensity levels.
This test method is controlled by ASME, ASTM and ISO Standards with damage grading levels.
